Offering drum set and percussion lessons in person in the Philadelphia area or online via Zoom!

Having been teaching private students for over seven years, I am prepared to help everyone no matter where they are in their musical journey. My goal is to inspire future artists just as my mentors have done for me by helping you discover your own individual artistry. I truly believe that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to teaching drums and percussion and that is why I create a customized learning environment for every one of my students. Whether you are a professional musician or music hobbyist, I can help you achieve whatever musical goals you would like to pursue. Lessons can focus on anything from:

  • Drum Set (jazz, rock, hip-hop, etc.)

  • Percussion (orchestral, rudimental)

  • Jazz (stylistic approach, comping, improvisation)

  • Composition

  • Technique

  • Any goal you may have!

- For Parents -

For younger students, it is recommended the parents help guide their student through their beginning stages of lessons and provide the student with encouragement and enthusiasm. For the students sake, help guide them or even practice with them during beginner exercises to help improve morality and understanding. Finally, to teach music you are also teaching a student basic life skills. Goal making, self-acceptance, personal responsibility, organization, and other life skills all come with learning a musical instrument. Helping ensure a student has practiced for an adequate amount of time, has learned their material, shows up to lesson and shows up on time can greatly help them progress as a musician and as a human being.

- Student Testimonials -

"Since our son, Zane, has had lessons with Larry, he has improved tremendously. Even though he has his lessons over FaceTime, it’s just like Larry is there in person . . . We highly recommend Larry Shaw."

Branden | Parent

"Working with Larry has been a very beneficial experience. He is an awesome teacher who provides a great learning environment . . . I highly recommend him as a teacher to anyone who is interested in furthering their education and ability in percussion."

Gianna - Student

"Out of all the drum teachers that I have had, you are my favorite. You help me learn awesome stuff. Counting out beats and so much more. You are one of the reasons I will miss Laramie."

- Educator Testimonials -

"As my teaching assistant, I have full trust in how Larry teaches the freshman and sophomores in

my studio. He has full mastery in the fundamentals which he works to instill in underclassmen. The

students he teaches have the upmost respect for him and appreciate his methodology greatly. Larry has

developed a passion for education and passing on his love for music to future generations. I would fully

trust Larry to teach my own children, percussion, or otherwise."

Dr. Andrew Wheelock | University of Wyoming | Assistant Professor - Director of Percussion

Mr. Shaw brings a contagious enthusiasm to music class. He is energetic, engaging, and consistently finds ways to draw students into the music. . . Mr. Shaw combines teaching music with students doing music. Too often students learn about music without actually playing/making music. . . Mr. Shaw artfully connects doing music while at the same time advancing students' knowledge about music.
